Do you need a self priming pump?

As self-priming pumps play an increasingly important role in many fields, research on these products has also attracted more attention. Do you need a self-priming pump?

This article contains the following:

  • Why does the self-priming pump have to add water every time

  • Why use a self-priming pump

  • How to choose a self-priming pump

1.Why does the self-priming pump have to add water every time

Since the self-priming pump can store a part of water, it does not need to be irrigated when it is started again. As for the suction stroke, it should be related to the cavitation allowance of the respective pump. The self-priming process relies on the self-priming pump to press the water out of the self-priming pump to form a vacuum and suck the water into the pump, so except for the pump where the impeller is immersed in the water, the commonly used self-priming pump products are all before the pump is started. The pump must be filled with water, commonly known as the irrigation pump. The self-priming pump has a one-way valve at the upper inlet of the pump body because of the relatively large inlet position of the pump body.

The methods of self-priming pump irrigation are as follows:

The first method is to directly inject water into the self-priming pump from the inlet or outlet of the self-priming pump. At this time, it should be noted that the exhaust valve next to the self-priming pump outlet should be opened to exhaust; there is another method that is The air in the self-priming pump is pre-extracted with a vacuum pump, and the self-priming pump is started after reaching a certain vacuum degree. In this case, the valve of the water outlet pipe needs to be closed.

In the pump industry, "water diversion" refers specifically to "water for guidance". Because some pumps must add water manually before working to form a sealed environment inside the pump, and then the internal components of the pump will move to create a partial vacuum, so that the external water can be pressed into the inlet of the pump by the atmospheric pressure under the internal and external pressure difference to complete the suction action . For example, in the old water-carrying buckets used in rural areas, it was necessary to add water before the water in the well could be sucked up.

The level of suction is related to the power, flow and structure of the pump, but it is limited by the volume and power. The self-priming suction of general micro water pumps is not easy to be higher, because an atmospheric pressure can increase the water pressure at most. The height of 10.3 meters (because the pressure generated by an atmospheric pressure ≈ 10.3 meters of water column), the maximum self-priming suction stroke is about 10.3 meters.

2.Why use a self-priming pump

Less infrastructure, self-priming pumps are installed above the water source (usually on the "ground"), so less infrastructure is required to install them;

Easy to maintain and repair, and because they are installed on the ground, they are easier to access;

To make the operator safer, because there is no mechanical equipment in the wet well, there is no need to open the wet well cover, and there is no need for a hoist or crane (as is the case with submersible pumps).

3.How to choose a self-priming pump

Need to choose the appropriate pump [fuel pump for fuel, solid treatment pump for wasting water, etc .;

Need to choose the correct size of self-priming pump for head and flow;

NPSH calculations are required to ensure that there is sufficient atmospheric pressure to support the expected flow, and the pump speed must be fast enough to start the pump.
